World Bank Funding for Small Scale Aids Projects

The World Bank has made available 954 million meticais (about 40,000 US dollars) to finance 14 projects, submitted by the same number of Mozambican NGOs, who are undertaking activities against the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Maputo city.

The World Bank has made available 954 million meticais (about 40,000 US dollars) to finance 14 projects, submitted by the same number of Mozambican NGOs, who are undertaking activities against the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Maputo city.

Speaking during the ceremony to announce this funding, Samuel Quive, the coordinator of the Maputo city HIV/AIDS nucleus, said the initiative was designed to increase the number of organisations working in this area, and make possible diversified support to mitigate the impact of the disease on the lives of people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. Quive said this sum is the first of three installments of a total funding of almost 2.5 billion meticais. The projects are short term - ranging from three months to a year. The organisations involved should request the second instalment of the funding as soon as they have spent 80 per cent of the first instalment, in order to avoid interruption in the projects.

"We hope that the organisations involved will know how to use this money in the best way to combat AIDS and support the people living with AIDS", said Quive. "They should present regular reports and accounts of their activities".

The latest figures from the Ministry of Health indicate that 17.3 per cent of Maputo citizens aged between 15 and 49 are carrying the HIV virus that causes AIDS.
