Spain Supports Flood Victims

The Spanish government, through its International Cooperation Agency (AECI) and the local Red Cross has just granted 250,000 Euros (about 330,000 US dollars) plus equipments worth about 200,000 Euros in support of the victims of floods in the Zambezi valley in the western Tete, and the central Sofala, Manica, and Zambezia Mozambican provinces.

The equipments, expected to be flown into Beira, the capital of Sofala, this Friday, include cisterns, 20 liter water containers, and tents, to reinforce the existing materials.

A press release from the Spanish Embassy in Mozambique, received by AIM on Friday, says that the 250,000 Euros are for the acquisition of the necessary goods to face the situation of the people affected by the floods in the central region of the country.

The money, that is totally directed to the victims of the foods, is to be managed by the Disasters Management National Institute (INGC).

Such aid comes at a time when INGC urgently needs at least more 3,000 tents with the capacity for eight to 12 people each, to shelter the victims.

INGC national director Paulo Zucula said that at least 2,607 people have been rescued to safety along the Zambezi valley, in Manica, Sofala, and Zambezia, and Tete provinces this week.

The floods are currently affecting about 88,600 people, who are relying on support for survival after loosing all their property.
