Portuguese Funding for Police Training

The Portuguese government has promised to grant 1.7 million euros (about 2.3 million US dollars) this year.

To finance training programmes for the Mozambican police.

A memorandum of understanding to this end was signed in Maputo on Monday by the Permanent Secretary in the Mozambican Ministry of the Interior, Zefanias Muhate, and the deputy president of the Portuguese Development Support Institute (IPAD), Artur Lami.

According to Muhate, 724,800 euros of the grant comes from IPAD, while the remaining 977,800 euros comes from the Portuguese Ministry of Home Affairs.

"The money will be administered by the Portuguese Ministry of Home Affairs, and it will cover the costs of Portuguese instructors and trainers visiting Mozambique to train our police officers ", said Muhate. "It will also pay for some Mozambican policemen to travel to Portugal".

Muhate told AIM that this year four Mozambican police officers will visit Portugal for training in logistics and "special security activities".

Currently there are seven Mozambican policemen on training courses in Portugal.
