Recent HIV/AIDS figures for Mozambique show that prevalence rates among the adult population have increased by more than 1 percent to nearly 15 percent.

According to the Portuguese news agency, Lusa, a recent report by the country's National Statistics Institute (INE) suggested that if the pandemic continued to go unchecked, HIV/AIDS would be the cause of one in three deaths in Mozambique by 2010.

There were currently 500 HIV infections daily, and some 97,000 people could die of AIDS-related illnesses in 2004 alone.

Mozambique had an estimated 273,000 AIDS orphans, and the report noted that at least 90 children became infected daily through vertical transmission - infections passed from mother to child during pregnancy.
