Machaze Made Wrong Use of District Money

Machaze was the worst district in the central Mozambican province of Manica in terms of the use of the seven million meticais (about 280,000 US dollars) allocated to every district last year for local development projects, according to the Manica provincial governor, Raimundo Diomba, cited in Wednesday's issue of the Maputo daily "Noticias".

Diomba was addressing an extraordinary session of the district government during a recent visit to Machaze.

He noted that all projects for which the money was used have nothing to do with the set objectives, which are mainly for food production and projects for the creation of jobs and income generation.

He noted that in Machaze, most of the money was used to build or rehabilitate social infrastructures and roads (usually considered a responsibility of the central or provincial governments), and to purchase domestic utensils.

However, Diomba said that, taking into account that this is a new initiative, and most district authorities were not yet clear about what the money was for, "nobody will be punished" for this misuse of funds.

He stressed it was necessary to avoid such irregularities in the future, because then appropriate measures will be taken in order to ensure that this money is used to make the district a pole of development.

During his visit to Machaze, Diomba said that the poverty that affects Manica, and the country at large, can never be eradicated until the leaders and the population start being creative in search of alternatives to face the problems of hunger and poverty.

He called for the introduction of drought resistant crops, such as cassava and sweet potatoes, and the use of low lying lands close to river banks for the production of vegetables.

He also recommended the production of the shrub jatropha for bio-diesel and cashew nuts because the Machaze soils are good for those products, which have a high commercial value.
