The Mozambican International Relations Higher Institute (ISRI) signed a bilateral cooperation agreement with the American Southern University in Louisiana on Friday in terms of which the two institutions are to exchange lecturers and students, and offer master degree courses in both countries.
The document was signed by ISRI vice-chancellor Jamisse Taimo and his Southern University's counterpart Leon R. Tarver.
Before the ceremony, Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano stressed the importance of academic cooperation between higher education institutions.
He said that, since ISRI is introducing a new course, for Public Administration, and taking into account that the Southern University has been offering courses in this area, this will bring mutual benefits.
The Southern University's Public Administration School was baptised with the name of former South African President Nelson Mandela.
Chissano said that, taking into account the Southern University's experience in cooperation, with more than 22 higher education institutions in Africa, including the Eduardo Mondlane University, in Mozambique, he has no doubt that this cooperation will help ISRI fulfil its mission.
For his part, Taimo expressed confidence that Southern University will help ISRI not only to improve the courses it is offering now, but also to introduce, for the first time, master and Ph degrees.
