Heavy Rains Threaten Flooding

Heavy rains are continuing in much of central and northern Mozambique, as well as in the neighbouring countries of Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe, leading to fears of flooding in some of the main river valleys.

The Wednesday bulletin from the National Water Board (DNA) notes that the rains have inundated parts of the country's second largest city, Beira, and the situation there will worsen if the rains continue.

There is also flooding along the Lucite river in Manica province, thanks to rains in both central Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

The Pungue river has also risen sharply, though there are so far no reports of flooding in the Pungue basin.

The DNA warns of a sharp rise in the level of the Licungo river in Zambezia province, and urges people living downstream from the town of Mocuba to keep on the alert for possible flooding.

The largest of the country's rivers, the Zambezi, remains fairly stable, presenting no immediate threat.

The same is true of most rivers in the southern provinces, except for the Mutamba river in Inhambane. The DNA warns people in this area to keep away from areas prone to flooding.
