The Mozambican government on Wednesday increased the prices of all liquid fuels by up to 9.3 per cent, with the new prices taking effect immediately According to a statement from the Ministry of Energy, the largest price increase is for kerosene, which goes up from 17.8 to 19.45 meticais a litre, an increase of 9.3 per cent.

(At current exchange rates, there are about 25.9 meticais to the US dollar.) Petrol rises by four per cent, from 26.84 to 27.92 meticais a litre. but drivers of diesel-fuelled vehicles will feel little pain, since the price of diesel rises by only 0.4 per cent, from 24.02 to 24.12 meticais a litre.

Jet fuel now costs 20.33 meticais a litre, a 3.2 per cent increase on the previous price of 19.7 meticais.

Fuel oil rises by 2.3 per cent, from 11.74 to 12.1 meticais a litre, while LPG cooking gas is up by 1.4 per cent, from 40.4 to 40.98 meticais per kilo.

The last fuel price changes were on 21 February. Since then, according to the Ministry statement, the import prices of kerosene, petrol and jet fuel, have risen, and the metical has depreciated against the US dollar, the currency in which imported fuel is denominated, by 1.3 per cent. The government has also increased fuel tax.

The government reviews fuel prices every month, and alters them whenever the import price of fuel, expressed in meticais, moves in either direction by more than three per cent, or whenever there is a change in fuel tax.

The new prices apply to the port cities of Maputo, Matola, Beira and Nacala, where the fuel is unloaded. Elsewhere in the country fuel distributors are allowed to add their transport costs when calculating the final price.
