Mozambique's Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy on Tuesday announced slight rises in the prices of most liquid fuels, taking effect immediately.

Thus the price of unleaded petrol goes up by one per cent, from 18,160 to 18,350 meticais a litre (at current exchange rates, there are about 23,000 meticais to the US dollar).

For petrol with lead the rise is scarcely noticeable, at 0.05 per cent - an increase from 18,340 to 18,350 meticais a litre.

Diesel is now 0.6 per cent more expensive, rising from 14,490 to 14570 meticais a litre.

A litre of jet fuel now costs 11,017.9 instead of 11,009.4 meticais - a rise of just 0.1 per cent.

Kerosene, often regarded as the fuel of the poor, falls in price by 0.1 per cent, from 10,270 to 10,260 meticais a litre.

LPG cooking gas also becomes cheaper - it falls from 15,399.5 to 15,026.4 meticais a litre. The sharpest price fall is for fuel oil which now costs 8,414.1 rather than 8,746.3 meticais a litre, a decline of 3.8 per cent.
These prices refer to the port cities where the fuel is unloaded - Maputo, Matola, Beira and Nacala. Elsewhere in the country, fuel distributors are allowed to add their transport costs in the final price.

The Mozambican government reviews fuel prices every month, and alters them whenever the import costs rises or falls by more than three per cent, when expressed in meticais, and whenever there is a change in fuel tax.
