Discussions On Law Against Corruption Postponed Again

The Assembly of the Republic, the Mozambican parliament, postponed on Thursday, until next Tuesday, the debates of the report on the reexamined law against corruption, that has been on every day schedule since last week but was never broached.

The Assembly of the Republic, the Mozambican parliament, postponed on Thursday, until next Tuesday, the debates of the report on the reexamined law against corruption, that has been on every day schedule since last week but was never broached.

This law was passed by the parliament last year, and submitted to the president for promulgation, but he returned it to the parliament, for reexamination after finding it contained some inconstitutionalities.

Some of these concerned the powers it conferred to the members of the anti-corrution staff, which included ordering preventive detention which, according to the constituion, belongs to the courts.

Last week, the debate could not take place because the Renamo-Electoral Union opposition coalition demanded the presence of a representative of the president in parliament to explain the reason for it to be promulgated, thus returning it to for further discussions.

The deputies had not received any document explaining those reasons, which only happened on Thursday, and they needed time to study it.

The chairperson of the Assembly of the Republic, Eduardo Mulembue, did not say whether or not this means that no representative of the president will be present on Tuesday. This session of the parliament closes next Thursday.

Next week's agenda of the parliament includes also the presentation of a report on the revision of the Electoral.
This law is essential to make sure that this year's general elections are run according to the revised law, which means that if discussions are not completed on Wednesday, this would call for an extraodinary session to deal with this matter.

Another issue that should also have been discussed during this ordinary session is the revision of the constitution
