Country Needs 24 Million U.S. Dollars to Store Obsolete Weaponry

Mozambican Defense Minister Tobias Dai told AIM this Tuesday that the government is raising about 600 million meticais (about 24 million US dollars) to build silos to store obsolete weaponry.

"A study has been conducted, and there is even a plan to transfer the arsenals to safer areas. About 600 million meticais are necessary for the building of silos in different sites across the country that have already been identified and the government is currently working to raise funds for that purpose" said the source.

Letting to understand that the cause of the Malhazine explosions were the high temperetarures, Dai said that "the country is recording high temperatures and technicians are working to protect the area containing the explosive materials in order to reduce their exposure to the sun and other bad weather factors, because "our material is placed at open air, and that is why it has been affected by high temperatures".

In Parallel with transferring the explosive devices from inhabited areas, the Mozambican Armed Forces are also carrying out an operation to destroy the obsolete materials stored in those warehouses.

The Defense Ministry said that it destroyed about 100 tonnes of obsolete weaponry this year in the Maputo province alone, and this work is being done in the entire country. "The objective is for us to get rid of these explosive devices in the country", said Dai.

The armed Forces arsenal across the country are now surrounded by inhabited areas, and Dai admits that " this is a great risk for people".
