Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano was decorated on Friday by his French counterpart Jacques Chirac with the Order of the Legion of Honour Great Cross Medal.
This is the highest decoration in France and is awarded in recognition of a personality's deeds and it is a symbol of respect and friendship with the decorated person.
During the ceremony, that took place in Paris, Chirac said that the award is in recognition of Chissano's contribution to the welfare of Mozambique and Africa in general, and of his role in the strengthening of Mozambique's relations with France.
According to a press release received by AIM on Saturday, Chissano, who is also the chairperson of the African Union, thanked the distinction stressing that he did what he could with the support of the Mozambican people and friends, including the French President.
He promised to work even harder to make honour to the decoration he has just received.
