China Grants 1.5 Million USD to Army

The Chinese government is to grant to Mozambique a sum of 1.5 million USD earmarked for the reequipment of a number of Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) departments, currently in the process of refurbishment.

This follows a new protocol of military assistance, signed recently in Beijing, China, between FADM Chief of Staff Lagos Lidimo and his Chinese counterpart, Liang Guanglie.

Describing the Chinese military assistance as crucial, Lidimo said that it will contribute to the growth and re-equipment of the Mozambican Army, and help meet the country's challenges lying ahead in terms of defence and security.

Lidimo embarked on an official trip to Beijing late June having as the main points of his agenda mechanisms to increase military cooperation between Mozambique and China.

This grant follows another logistical assistance to the FADM made last week, when the Chinese embassy to Mozambique donated to the Defense Ministry (MDN), computers, photocopier machines, cameras, TV sets, DVDs, washing and drying machines, fridges, among others.

The last donation is estimated at 800,000 USD, and was received by the Defense Minister, Tobias Dai.

Part of these items will be delivered to the military quarter (Bairro Militar) in Maputo, which includes barracks, shooting range, night and sports clubs for the officers and soldiers.

On the occasion, the Chinese Ambassador to Mozambique, Quiang Peng, hailed the stand of the Mozambican government supporting "one-China policy".

"Mozambique has always supported 'one-China policy' and we express our gratitude to the Mozambican government", said Quiang, stressing that Taiwan is "a matter of China official interest and sentiment of the Chinese nation".

According to the ambassador, the solution for Taiwan will lead to China's total unification. "It is a view taken strongly by the Chinese government and its people, and I believe that it is a fair view, and besides Mozambique it will also be widely supported by the international community".

He said that China privileges strengthening relations between the Chinese and the Mozambican armies "to promote and even deepen the cooperation between both countries, taking into account that Mozambique has maintained good relations with China, particularly on international issues and most importantly on isseus related to territorial integrity, by always supporting the one-China policy".

Earlier this year, China donated equipment valued at 1.5 million USD to the Mozambican Army. The donation, made up of non lethal equipment, included light vehicles, computers, and assorted uniforms for the Mozambican army, navy and air force.
