The United States embassy in Maputo has offered small sums of money to religious and other organisations to run activities related to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
A Friday press release from the embassy says that these funds form part of President George Bush's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.
The money is to be spent on HIV/AIDS prevention or in the care of orphans and other vulnerable children affected by AIDS.
The embassy describes those eligible to receive the funds as "Community organisations and NGOs including, but not restricted to, organisations of a religious nature". The maximum amount of money available per project is 10,000 US dollars, and the embassy says it will give preference to projects asking for less.
Each proposal should include a detailed budget, and an estimate of the number of people it expects to reach. The money, the embassy warns, may not be used to finance the acquisition of vehicles, large scale construction, trips abroad, or the normal running costs (wages, rent, electricity bills etc) of the organisation making the proposal.
The projects must be submitted to the embassy no later than 20 August.
