Tsunami Warning Issued

The Mozambican government's relief agency, the National Disaster Management Institute (INGC), has warned that a tsunami may hit the Mozambican coast on Wednesday night.

The tsunami was caused by a seaquake in Indonesia that occurred in the early afternoon. A statement from the INGC warns that gigantic waves from the tsunami could hit the entire length of the Mozambican coast, some time between 21.00 and 01.00 local time (19.00 to 23.00 GMT).

The INGC admits that it has no idea yet how large the waves will be, but urges several basic precautions - notably that anyone living within 150 metres of the coastline should move immediately to higher ground.

All vehicles should avoid coastal roads on Wednesday night, and all boats at sea should head for port at once.

The INGC warns that the situation "may be very serious and dangerous", and that its recommendations should be observed until advice to the contrary.
