Mozambican Prime Minister Luisa Diogo on Wednesday expressed satisfaction with the ever wider range of the intervention of the United Nations Education Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO), not only in Mozambique, but in the entire African Continent.

Education, Human Resources, Science and Technology, Culture and Communications, are areas where UNESCO has been concentrating its support.

She was speaking during the official opening of a five day Consultative Meeting between UNESCO general director and the organization's National Commissions in Africa.

On the occasion, Diogo recalled the words of Mozambican President Joaquim Chissano at the UNESCO headquaters in Paris last week, when he praised the multiple importance of this organization in the African Continent's development efforts.

He stressed, then, the importance of UNESCO in the establishment of peace as essential condition for development and promotion of education for citizenship. He said that these factors are essential for the building of democratic societies and for the conservation of the African Cultural heritage.

Diogo said that the way UNESCO faces its role in Africa gives all partners an opportunity to implement their adopted strategies in the context of the New Partnership for the African Development (NEPAD).

She explained that NEPAD seeks, in a sustainable way, relaunch the development of Africa, creating new opportunities and a culture of peace, that UNESCO has the mandate to preserve in all its areas of action.

She described this meeting as a unique opportunity for the different participants to analyse UNESCO's programme and budget for the period 2002/2007.
The plan aims at contributing to peace world wide, and to human development, through education, science, culture, communication, among other factors.

The plan caters for a continual search for solutions to the big problems that affect the least developed countries, and make cooperation with Africa a priority for UNESCO.
