Govt to Invest 8.6 Million U.S.D. in Fishfarming

The Mozambican government is to invest over 219 million meticais (about 8.6 million USD) over the next five years as part of its strategy for the development of fishfarming in the country.

With this investment, the government seeks to ensure a sustainable development of this activity and, therefore, improve the quality of life of the citizens that rely on aquaculture as their source of income, current production and productivity.

Speaking in Maputo on Tuesday, shorty after the weekly meeting of the Ministers Cabinet, the government's spokesperson, Luís Covane, said that this sum will be used for the purchase of tanks, demarcation and mapping of the areas where this activity is to be developed.

Currently, Mozambique is producing 13.000 tons of prawns, of which just one thousand are from fishfarms, covering an area of 258.000 hectares of fresh water and 30.000 from sea water.

Therefore, the government wants to increase production levels from the one thousand to two thousand tons of prawns, as well as the number of people involved in this activity, who are expected to reach 4,000.

This last move has been encouraged by the low costs involved in this activity, as fish farms demand low inputs on labour and equipments, thereby reducing the production costs.

"The government wants to create a favourable environment for the development of fishfarming to a level where the private sector plays an important role and that the regulatory bodies have the capacity to manage and regulate this development", said Covane.

The advantage of this strategy is to improve the productivity, while maintaining low costs.

Today, most of the countries in Latin America and Asia, the main competitors of Mozambique in international markets, mainly in the European market, have resorted to fishfarming, gaining a more competitive advantage.
