Ibis invited to implement new community participation project (from Newsletter 10 – Ibis in Mozambique, September 2003)

The local government in the Niassa Province in northern Mozambique has invited Ibis to prepare and facilitate the implementation of a new project for Community Participation in Local Governance in the Majune District. The project will be financed by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) through the 'Forward Niassa' programme.

The project is intended to improve the participation of the community and civil society in local government activities and improve the communication in the sparsely populated rural district.

A new community radio is planned. It will run by community based organizations. The project will also focus on developing the organisations and the capacity of the local government institutions. The Majune project is very similar to a project, which currently awaits approval by the Ibis South Committee and Board before being implemented in the equally remote districts of Mavago and Muambe with financial support from Ireland Aid.
