New education and development projects in the North (from Newsletter 12 - Ibis in Mozambique, 2003)

Some of the poorest districts in Mozambique, Muembe and Mavago, will be targets for two comprehensive education and development projects in the coming years.

The Swedish development agency, SIDA, will support a five years project, which aims at improving the quality of education in the two districts. The plans are inspired by Ibis’ NIAEDUC-project in the Niassa-province and will consist of the same components: In service teacher training, development of local curriculum in cooperation with the communities, capacity building of school boards, development of new education materials etc. The budget is 12,8 MSEK (appr 1,7 M USD).

Ireland Aid will fund a three and a half years district development project. It aims at increasing the capacity of the administration of the two districts, at strengthening the civil society organisations and establishing a community radio in Muembe. The budget is 1,36 M Euro.

Ibis’ country director, Arne Mortensen, explains, that the process of finding coordinators for the two projects has already started. He expects a project staff of 8-10 persons, who will initially be trained at Ibis’ new training center in Massangulo – also in the northern Niassa-province.

SIDA and Ibis are negotiating another district development project in the Majune-district - similar to the new one in Mavago and Muembe. In Majune Ibis is already running an education project. /tgn
